 In the blink of an eye, a Formula 1 pit crew can swap all four tires on a car capable of hitting over 200 mph. A Pit Stop is far more than routine maintenance—it is a high-stakes science where a fraction of a second determines victory or defeat.

How Many Crew Members Are in a Pit Stop?

To service the car in under two seconds, a crew of over 20 highly trained mechanics works in perfect synchronization, with each person performing a hyper-specific role:

  • Gunmen (4): One per wheel, equipped with high-powered pneumatic guns to loosen and tighten the single wheel nut in split seconds.

  • Tire Off Crew (4): Positioned to pull the hot, worn tires off the car the instant the nut clears.
